Nature Journaling at the OVLC

Native Plant and Geology Hike
Beneath your feet lies columns of history like pages in a book. Layers of sand and silt like text illustrate an ever evolving landscape. Creating the basis of our ecosystems, soils are composed in mosaics of features whose characters have been expressed for millions of years. In rhythmic harmony with the soil, plants swiftly arose from the textured ground and cultivated a biodiverse foundation for life.
Join Sophie and Martin as they depict the clues found within sands and lignin and dive into the dynamics of life that has shaped our existence.

Rattlesnake Avoidance Training for Dogs
Rattlesnakes are active year-round in Ojai, making avoidance training essential for dogs that spend time outdoors. Due to high demand, OVLC has added an extra half-day to our Rattlesnake Avoidance Training for Dogs, now taking place May 16–18. This training teaches dogs to recognize and avoid rattlesnakes, helping to keep both pets and owners safe on the trails. Appointments open one month before the event. Trainer
We are proud to host expert dog trainers from High on Kennels. Each trainer is highly experienced at training dogs to avoid rattlesnakes.
High on Kennels is well known for being a problem solver when it comes to difficult dogs.
Training Process
Our training clinics are conducted in a safe, humane, and controlled environment ensuring the safety of your dog, people, and rattlesnakes. The trainers have found that the best way to teach a dog to avoid rattlesnakes is to use live rattlesnake specimens that have been neutralized so that they cannot bite. The snakes are placed out in a field setting and the dogs are fitted with an electronic training collar. The dog is led through the field and allowed to encounter the rattlesnake at which point the dog is stimulated using the electronic collar. The training process is repeated several times to assure you that your dog will understand the sight, sound, and smell of a rattlesnake (they have a distinct odor that dogs can discern from other snakes). Help the OVLC maintain the trails throughout Ojai Valley on National Trails Day in the morning, then join us for a Volunteer Appreciation Party in the afternoon!

DON’T DOUBT THE TROUT: STEELHEAD, DAMS, AND WATERSHEDS
Join the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy on Saturday, March 1, at the historic Ventura River Steelhead Preserve for an evening of music, film, and conversation about steelhead trout and the rivers they call home. The night begins with a live performance by Par Avion, led by CalTrout Ambassadors Rebecca Ramirez and Bernard Yin, and a screening of Don't Doubt the Trout (directed by Ojai’s Isabela Zawistowska), which follows Rebecca and Bernard’s journey to understand Southern California’s endangered steelhead and how the experience deepens their connection to nature. The evening concludes with an outstanding panel of local conservation experts discussing fish, rivers, watersheds, and dam removal.

Onsite Seminar and Panel - A Sand County Almanac by Aldo Leopold
Join the Agora Foundation and the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy for a one-day celebration of Aldo Leopold’s A Sand County Almanac. Begin the day with a continental breakfast, followed by insightful presentations and a seminar exploring Leopold’s land ethic. Enjoy a vegetarian lunch, then immerse yourself in an afternoon film screening and a panel discussion on Leopold’s legacy and its relevance to Ojai’s conservation efforts. Panelists and presenters include Andy Gilman, Jon Christensen (UCLA), Richard Knight (CSU), and Tom Maloney (OVLC). Attend the full event, just the lunch, or the film and panel discussion. As Leopold wrote, “Civilization has so cluttered this elemental man-earth relationship… that awareness of it is growing dim.” Let’s reconnect and honor the foundation that supports us all.
