Snake season is all year round in Ojai! The Ojai Valley Land Conservancy is hosting a rattlesnake avoidance training clinic for dogs so you can take your dog outdoors with peace of mind.

Don’t forget to tell your friends and other dog lovers about the clinic!

Trainer

We are proud to host expert dog trainers from High on Kennels. Each trainer is highly experienced at training dogs to avoid rattlesnakes. High on Kennels is well known for being a problem solver when it comes to difficult dogs.

Training Process

Our training clinics are conducted in a safe, humane, and controlled environment ensuring the safety of your dog, people, and rattlesnakes. The trainers have found that the best way to teach a dog to avoid rattlesnakes is to use live rattlesnake specimens that have been neutralized so that they cannot bite. The snakes are placed out in a field setting and the dogs are fitted with an electronic training collar. The dog is led through the field and allowed to encounter the rattlesnake at which point the dog is stimulated using the electronic collar. The training process is repeated several times to assure you that your dog will understand the sight, sound, and smell of a rattlesnake (they have a distinct odor that dogs can discern from other snakes). The appointments take between 20-60 minutes, which includes check-in and the training. This assures that proper attention is given to all dogs.

  6. Kevin Cox says:

My dog did the training last year. I know that a refresher is advised. Is one year an appropriate time to do the refresher? If so, it is advised to do it yearly?

    • Tania says:

      Hi Kevin,

The trainer recommends it annually for a couple of years, and if you dog remembers from one year to the next you can skip some years. If it was your dog’s first training I would recommend signing up again and see how your dog reacts. If it does great, then ask Fred if he thinks you can skip a year or more. Some dogs need it every year and others just need it once. Personally my dog has gotten better but not perfect, so he is on his third year in a row and we hope we can skip a year after this one. :)

      Cheers,
      Tania

  7. Harrison Shotzbarger says:

Hi. I got the email this morning and tried to register but it says there are no times. Is the course filled? Does High on Kennels have private trainings? I was really looking for wars to this. Thanks so much!

    • Tania says:

      Hi Harrison,

The course filled all 72 spots in less than 7 hours! We will be opening up appointments for Monday this morning. It will be first come first serve. I recommend checking the website frequently today. You will have to check with High on Kennels for other trainings, but they are based in San Diego, so I hope you can make it to ours Monday!

      Cheers,
      Tania

  9. Phoebe S says:

I have been having trouble with the website- I haven’t been able to sign up for any of the events that do not say “full” . I have a 10 month old golden retriever and we could really use the rattlesnake training- we have seen many rattlesnakes around our house already this year. Please let me know if there is a class that I can sign up for.
    Thanks!
    Phoebe

    • Tania says:

      Hi Phoebe,

The registration sold out so quickly we didn’t even have a chance to mark the event full! We will be opening up appointments for Monday this morning. It will be first come first serve. I recommend checking the website frequently today.

      Cheers,
      Tania
