THE HUMAN ECOSYSTEM:

OUR DISCONNECTION FROM NATURE

The Ojai Valley Land Conservancy is opening its 2014 All About Ojai environmental learning series with an exploration of the human ecosystem by Dr. Lori Pye, PhD.  The presentation will take place at 10 am Saturday January 11, 2014  at the OVLC offices, 370 Baldwin Road, Bldg. A4.

The story of human evolution, the interaction of human nature and human society encompasses biology, ecology and psychology and has been at once creative and destructive. We too are an ecosystem participating in a wider complexity of life. Yet we are the only species causing the devastation of other living systems, including the planet we live on. Why?

The ecological challenges we face in today’s world are interconnected to economic, social and cultural issues and affect us all, our homes, communities and the planet itself. This raises vital questions: How are we living and managing our resources? How do we want to live? Are we relational or not? How well do we know ourselves and our role on the planet?

This talk will explore the ecopsychological underpinnings and narratives of these important questions and how we might create a new narrative for the relationships between nature and human nature.

Dr. Pye teaches Ecopsychology at the University of California in Santa Barbara (UCSB), in the KDHC Psychiatric Residency program at University of California Irvine, Naropa University, Antioch University Santa Barbara and an Ecopsychology Certification program. She also teaches mythology and depth psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute.
