Anne Lamott says there are really only three prayers –

“Please, please, please,” “Thank you, “ and “Wow!”

This series of painting fits in the “Wow!” category. The resilience and persistence of life amazes and wows me. I live on the edge of a bluff overlooking the Ventura River – a sanctuary of trails that go on forever. The past few years I have fallen out of bed, often early enough to follow the setting moon into the mountains, hit the trail and wandered – walking my way through grief, despair, and anger into joy. In spite of drought and fire, life continues to renew itself.

Beautiful lichen grows on dead branches

Lightening struck trees are reclaimed with exuberant mustard

Roots make their way around rocks, determined to nurture growth

Sacred white sage springs from the dry, dry dirt

With just a trickle of water, ferns emerge in the grotto

We are wrapped in a generous , blazing field of energy that will not be denied. We are immersed in its freedom, joy and peace all the time, and are blessed when we can sink into it. It carries us, it heals us.

I owe enormous gratitude to the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy who owns and protects this land and maintains these trails.
