Jane-Shanahan-head-shot-webJane was born in Manhattan Beach, California. While watching her mother paint watercolors, a love for painting was inspired; her love for it only grew from there. She received her Bachelors Degree in Fine Art from California State University, Long Beach. She went on to study with Robert E. Wood in his Green Valley Lake studio. She was set-forth to capture the essence of the human figure early on in her artwork and Robert’s art further developed that passion. Her watercolor paintings were loved by the Camarillo community giving Jane her first opportunity to be commissioned to paint the Camarillo Fiesta Days Poster and the Camarillo Ranch Merienda Poster. Later on one of her figurative watercolor paintings received 1st Place in the California Gold Coast Watercolor Society Juried Spring Show.

Upon moving to Ojai, where she currently resides, she found that painting with oils gave her art a whole different way of expressing herself through color and texture. Her move to oil painting helped to express a new chapter in her life. She went onto study with Gerd Koch in Ventura giving her a foundation in this new medium.

As she pursued this new form of art she was inspired by a philosophy teacher, Barrett Culmback, who changed her life. He inspired Jane so genuinely that she hoped to express his words of wisdom through her brush strokes. The vibrancy of oil, combined with rekindled inspiration, began to create imagery beyond what words could capture. Her artwork challenged and transformed old belief systems with modern day occurrences to give the world an opportunity to question what once was and what is now. The vision she wants to give humanity is the wisdom of unity. She continues to prove that there is no limit to what the human experience is capable of.
