Anything I could conceivably write about today would pale in comparison to the coolness of these photos.  Taken on OVLC’s new Fox Canyon Trail (of course) above Shelf Road.  Thanks to the intrepid Bardsley Smith for introducing us to Urocyon cinereoargenteus:

Some neat facts about the Gray Fox:

  • It is thought to be the most primitive of canids still in existence
  • The species name Cinereoargenteus means Ashy+Silver
  • The Channel Islands Gray Fox is the only other member of the Urocyon genus
  • Along with raccoon dogs they are the only canid that can climb trees
Raccoon Dog

Raccoon Dog

  • Nest in hollow logs or trees, up to 30 feet off the ground
  • They are monogamous, and the youngsters are called kits.
  • They are nocturnal, making Bardsley’s shots that much more awesome
