All About Ojai: Annual OVLC Herb Walk
Led by: Native plant guide Lanny Kaufer
Monday April 25, 2016 9:00 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Meet at the Oso Trailhead, Ventura River Preserve
Throughout 2016, Ojai native plant guide Lanny Kaufer is celebrating the 40th anniversary of leading “Herb Walks” in Ojai and the surrounding area. Lanny has been a strong supporter of the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy (OVLC) for many years. Once a year he generously offers to lead a hike as part of our All About Ojai environmental learning series. This year he will lead an Herb Walk up Rice Canyon out of the Oso Trailhead on the OVLC’s Ventura River Preserve.
A retired public high school teacher with a Biology degree from the University of California, Lanny specializes in making learning about nature accessible and fun for people of all ages. He acquired much of his plant knowledge in field study with well-known herbalists and ethnobotanists and has co-led workshops, field classes and expeditions with noted experts such as the late Chumash teacher Juanita Centeno, the late herbalist and author Michael Moore, author-herbalist Michael Tierra, author-herbalist Amanda McQuade Crawford, Professor James Adams of USC School of Pharmacy, and Chumash educator Julie Tumamait-Stenslie. In 2015 Lanny began offering plant classes through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, a branch of the California State University, Channel Islands, Extended University program.
This is a moderate walk on uneven ground so bring water and wear sturdy shoes and sun protection. Participation is limited to 20 hikers and reservations are required! The class is currently full. For more information or to add your name to the waiting list, contact Marti Reid at (805) 649-6852 ext. 2 or marti@ovlc.org or sign up below.
This once a year hike is free for OVLC members and $15 per person for non-members. Become a member today! A family membership is just $35 per year.
